Countries’ economic growth depends upon education to empower people with the knowledge, skills, and values to live in dignity, build their lives, and contribute to Quality education is a foundation stone to build or carve sustainable growth and development for every country. Today, more than 262 million children nd youth are out of school. Six out of ten are not acquiring basic literacy and numeracy after several years in school. 750 million adults are illiterate, fueling poverty and marginalization. Quality education should ensure inclusiveness, equitable quality and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

NITTE DU IS A SYNONYM FOR QUALITY EDUCATION

Nitte DU is committed to creating centres of excellence imparting quality education, as clearly stated in its vision statement. Its core values include excellence in a learner-centred education and instilling a sense of social responsibility through education.

AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences (ABSMIDS), one of the colleges of the Nitte Education Trust, then affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, was declared to be a “Deemed to be University” by the Ministry of Human Resource Development on 4th June 2008. In the subsequent year (2009) KS Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA), Nitte Gulabi Shetty Memorial Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (NGSMIPS), Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences (NUINS) and Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy (NIPT) also came under the ambit of the newly formed Deemed-to-be University. Nitte Institute of Communication (NICO) was established in 2012, Nitte University Centre for Science Education and Research (NUCSER) in 2013 and Nitte Institute of Architecture (NIA) in 2015. In 2021, Nitte Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH) became the most recent addition to the University. The University offers a total of 75 programs in the disciplines of medicine, allied health sciences, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, physiotherapy, speech and audiology, biological sciences, media & communication and Architecture. It has 4585 students, 561 faculty members and 2175 support staff on roll. The campus houses 118 classrooms and seminar halls equipped with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) aids. The students have access to 72 state of the art equipped laboratories for experiential learning across faculty.

The effort to remain relevant to the needs of the society and advancement of technology is constant. Nitte DU has extended its collaborations with regard to higher education and research to over 20 International Universities and Institutes across the globe. This activity encompasses exchange of faculty and students at doctoral or postdoctoral level for cross cultural learning and mutual exchange of knowledge and sharing skills.

NITTE DU A PARTNER FOR LIFELONG LEARNING EXPERIENCE:

In addition to providing quality education to all its enrolled students over the past 12 years, it has always welcomed the general public and innumerable lifelong learners with open arms.

     

Nitte DU provides free library facilities for external students and the general public. It also facilitates the utilization of its Laboratories by students who seek a break in learning their conventional courses, who want to explore alternative branches of education or conduct research activities.

Faculties from Nitte DU have participated in Television and Radio shows, educating the general public in local languages regarding health care and hygiene. They are also actively involved in writing newspaper articles about health.




Health awareness programs are regularly conducted for Anganwadi teachers. An Anganwadi Health Programme Conducted in the year 2019-2020 has benefitted 25 health workers.







Webinars, masterclass and public awareness talks on various subjects conducted by Community medicine, Psychiatry, Speech and hearing, Nursing, Community dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry department of Nitte DU. Implementation of various courses for external students on different subjects to enhance their skills and knowledge during exchange programs.





Nitte DU & COVID-19 PANDEMIC EDUCATIVE PROGRAMS:

Nitte DU was one of the first medical universities in the region to create online and offline educative sessions on the global crises caused by the pandemic of COVID-19. Nitte DU conducted various covid educative awareness programs for the general public in schools, colleges. Personnel working in other emergency services, such as the Karnataka State Reserve Police Services, were trained by Nitte DU to monitor their personal safety and public health during their duties amidst the pandemic.



N-SPECC (NITTE SPECIAL CHILDREN CARE) COVID SAFE PROJECT

Nitte DU conducted an educational program on Standard Operating Procedures during COVID-19 pandemic for the teachers of Government, Aided, Unaided schools and special educators of Special schools of Mangalore Taluk.



VACCINATION FOR ALL: EDUCATION AND AWARENESS PROGRAM

Nitte DU has actively participated in educating the public on vaccination. The University’s staff and students have conducted several programs online and offline to educate the masses on COVID-19 vaccination program of the country. https://kshegdehospital.in/vaccine.php



To reduce the myths streaming in social media, Nitte Healthy University Initiative released a special edition of a concerted, comprehensive, planned, and all-encompassing awareness manual that disseminated comprehensive information on local and global implications of the pandemic.



USE OF TECHNOLOGY DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC:

As part of Nitte Smart Health Village Project ‘Apathbandhu’, Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences, NU- MEDISiM, and Dept. of Public Health, KSHEMA jointly organized an education and awareness program for rural volunteers in first aid & emergency care, and the launch of ‘CoviSwas’ - Nitte Covid-19 Home Isolation App.

As a part of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan program, the Department of Public Health Dentistry, AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences and Sevanjali Trust, Farangipete organized a Training Program for School Teachers on” Online Teaching and Basic PowerPoint Presentation” at Sri Rama School, Arkula on 07/09/2020 from 10.30 am to 1 pm. A total of 11 teachers participated.
