Poverty was steadily decreasing globally over the past 25 years. However, the covid-19 pandemic has led to a setback in achieving this goal. Many people who had narrowly made way to escape extreme poverty were pushed back into it by the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, and climate change as well. Research suggests that the effects of COVID-19 on poverty will prevail through 2030.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
