QUALITY EDUCATION

INTRODUCTION

Education and literacy are the key indicators of a society that play a central role in enhancing overall socio-economic development of a country as a whole. To meet the changing dynamics of the present-day requirement with regard to quality education, innovation and research, Quality Education aims to make India a knowledge hub by equipping its students with skill development and up gradation including ICT and vocational training.

India has achieved significant progress towards the goal of Education for All. Constitutionally several key programmes and policies have been initiated to provide free and compulsory education to all children in the age group of six to fourteen years as a Fundamental Right. India has made extraordinary progress over the past decade in increasing access to elementary education, now reaching 96% of school-age children. Initiatives such as “Sarva Siksha Abhiyan” (SSA) and “Right to Education” (RTE) have given much required impetus to education system in India. Nitte (DU) provides excellent and quality education to its beneficiaries. Its core values include excellence in a learner-centered education and stimulating a sense of social responsibility through education. SDG 4 affirms quality education: to ensure inclusiveness, equitable quality education and to promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.


Nitte (DU) A Leader in Quality Education
We are committed to creating centres of excellence imparting quality education, as clearly stated in its vision statement. Its core values include excellence in a learner-centred education and instilling a sense of social responsibility through education.

AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences (ABSMIDS), one of the colleges of the Nitte Education Trust, then affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, was declared to be a “Deemed to be University” by the Ministry of Human Resource Development on 4th June 2008. In the subsequent year (2009) KS Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA), Nitte Gulabi Shetty Memorial Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (NGSMIPS), Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences (NUINS) and Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy (NIPT) also came under the ambit of the newly formed Deemed-to-be University. Nitte Institute of Communication (NICO) was established in 2012, Nitte University Centre for Science Education and Research (NUCSER) in 2013 and Nitte Institute of Architecture (NIA) in 2015. In 2021, Nitte Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH) became the most recent addition to the University.


Nitte (DU) one of the first Universities’ to implement NEP 2020:
Nitte (DU) launched two new age four- year undergraduate programmes from the academic year 2021-22 in compliance with the New Education System. The UG courses are BSc in Biomedical Sciences and BA in Media and Communication. They are designed to be student-centric, multidisciplinary and employment-oriented education in allegiance to the NEP 2020.

Resources for Public: A Life-Long Learning Experience
In addition to providing quality education to all its enrolled students over the past 12 years, it has always welcomed the general public and innumerable lifelong learners with open arms. Nitte (DU) provides free library facilities for external students and the general public.

It also facilitates the utilization of its laboratories by students who seek a break in learning their conventional courses, who want to explore alternative branches of education or conduct research activities.

The College has a fleet of 32 buses for students and staff from Karkala, Mangaluru, Udupi, Kundapur, Bantwal, Belthangady. Around 900 students from various parts of the region use these bus services for conveyance to and from the College.

The University’s playground is offered free of cost for use by neighbouring schools for annual sports events.


Nitte (DU) and Community Media for Spreading Education:
Faculty members from Nitte (DU) have participated in Television and Radio shows, educating the general public in local languages regarding health care and hygiene in the year 2021. They are also actively involved in writing newspaper articles about health care.




Nitte (DU) Outreach Activities:
Health awareness programs are regularly conducted for Anganwadi teachers. An Anganwadi Health Programme Conducted has benefitted 25 health workers. Webinars, masterclass and public awareness talks on various subjects conducted by Community medicine, Psychiatry, Speech and hearing, Nursing, Community dentistry, Paediatric dentistry department of Nitte (DU
  • Anganawadi childrens nutritional status were screened by calculating the BMI and were given education regarding proper diet and good hygiene habits general health checkup was conducted on 17.11.2021 by interns at Kadri Anganawadi under the guidance of MO Kadri UHTC.
  • The Department of Psychiatry along with Student wing of the Nitte Bioethics Steering committee and National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell, Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences observed “International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” on 26th June 2021. The theme being “Share Facts on Drugs and Save Lives”. on this regard department has held programme to promote awareness on drug use among students of various constituent colleges of Nitte Deemed to be University.
  • The District Health and Family Welfare Department, Dakshina Kannada, District Reproductive and Child Health Department, Dakshina Kannada and National Oral Health Programme, Dakshina Kannada in association with A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore conducted a training programme for the newly appointed Community Health Officers of Dakshina Kannada on 20.12.2021 at RAPCC Hall, Wenlock Government District Hospital. Around 62 Community Health Officers participated in this training programme
  • A health education program was conducted by the Department of Community Medicine, KSHEMA in the epidemiological unit of K S Hegde Hospital, Deralakatte, and Mangalore on 28th of January 2021 for Kannada and Malayalam patients. The theme of the programme was Nutrition in TB patients.





  • Vocational Training provided by Nitte (DU)
    Implementation of various courses for external students on different subjects to enhance their skills and knowledge during exchange programs.


    Nitte (DU) Awareness programme on Covid 19 vaccine:
    Nitte (DU) was one of the first medical universities in the region to create online and offline educative sessions on COVID-19 vaccine. Nitte (DU) conducted various educative awareness programs for the general public in schools, colleges and also for personnel working in other emergency services. Department of Community medicine KSHEMA, conducted an awareness programme on COVID 19 vaccine on 04-02-2021 at KS Hegde Hospital, Derlakatte.. The programme was conducted targeting the patients of the medicine ward.



    N-SPECC (Nitte Special Children Care) Covid-19 Safe Program
    Nitte (DU) conducted an educational program on Standard Operating Procedures during COVID-19 pandemic for the teachers of government, aided, unaided schools and special educators of special schools of Mangalore taluk.

    The NSPECC department has previously conducted Covid awareness program for the teachers of Government, Aided and Unaided schools of Mangalore North & South zone which spanned over a period of 4 months from Aug 2020 to December 2020. Special educators of special schools of Mangalore were also included in the program. The success of the first phase led to the N-SPECC COVID SAFE PROGRAM 2nd phase, COVID 19 VACCINATION FOR ALL - 2021, which is an outreach program initiated by Nitte Special Child Care Centre (N- SPECC), a unit of Department of Pediatric & Preventive Dentistry, A.B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental sciences, Nitte (Deemed to be University) in collaboration with Samagra Shikshana Karnataka, Dakshina Kannada Zilla.

    N-SPECC (NITTE SPECIAL CHILDREN CARE) Collaboration with Samagra Shikshana Karnataka:
    District level training on Physiotherapy & sign language for the special educators (BIERT- Block Inclusive education resource teachers) by resource persons organized by NSPECC in collaboration with Samagra Shikshana Karnataka through Nitte Institute of speech & hearing and Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy.

    A Training Program For Rural Volunteers:
    As part of Nitte Smart Health Village Project ‘Apathbandhu’, Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences, NU-MEDISiM, and Dept. of Public Health, KSHEMA jointly organized a training program for rural volunteers in first aid & emergency care, and the launch of ‘CoviSwas’ - Nitte Covid-19 Home Isolation App on 4th and 5th August 2021 respectively, at the Atal Incubation Centre, Nitte, Karkala. A total of 14 volunteers from Nitte village were trained for two days in first aid and emergency skills such as hand hygiene, wound dressing, checking vital signs, bandaging and restraining, cardio pulmonary resuscitation, management of poisonous bite, haemorrhage control, trauma care, cervical spine stabilization, shifting & transfer, ORS preparation, management of foreign body aspiration, management of burns and management of convulsion.
