INTRODUCTION

The Global Goals SDG5 focuses on giving equal chances to women by empowering women and girls with equal rights and the right to education. It aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Worldwide, 1 in 4 girls between the ages of 15 and 19 are neither employed nor in education or training compared to 1 in 10 boys.

Nitte University has constantly identified the need with renewed efforts to promote women’s educational and professional competency advancement. Recruitment of women in the workforce and encouraging girls to enrol to under-represented subjects has ensured that there is no disparity in genders in all fields. As an organization, it fosters a gender- diverse, safe and encouraging work environment. Through a diverse c u r r i c u l u m , appropriate policies and mentorship programs. The girl students are equipped for success at personal and professional levels.

WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP ROLES
With the University focus on diversity during recruitment and fair compensation and promotion procedures, there are women holding administrative and leadership posts in the University.


COMMITTEES AND CELLS FOR PROTECTING AND PROMOTING GENDER EQUALITY
Committees such as the Women’s Cell, Prevention of Sexual Harassment Cell, Equal Opportunities Cell, and Gender Sensitization Cell are present at the Institutional and University level that identify, counsel and address any grievances concerning women staff and students.

GENDER ANALYSIS & GOOD GOVERNANCE:
Nitte (DU) is committed to promoting gender equity and encouraging women’s participation in its programs. The University tracks the entry and success of women students using metrics like application rates, entry rates and completion rates within the minimum stipulated time.

When averaged across all the programs of the University, 96% of women students completed their programs within a minimum stipulated time. Compared to the completion rate for men at 87%, women have a higher completion rate. The completion rate for women students ranged from78% to 100%.


WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS AND ACHIEVERS:
  • Dr Sumalatha R Shetty, Professor of Anaesthesiology & Critical Care, was elected as President-Elect of All India Difficult Airway Association (AIDAA) 2021-2023.
  • Dr Juliet Mohan Raj, Assistant Professor, received the DST-CRG grant titled “Bacteriophages and their products for controlling the biofilms of drug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae.”
  • Dr Indrani Karunasagar was awarded Fellowship by Karnataka State Technology Academy (KSTA) in recognition of her outstanding contribution.
  • Prof. (Dr.) Mithra N Hegde was conferred the IACDE National Academic Excellence Award 2020 by the Indian Association of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics at the National Conference held from 26th to 28 Feb 2021 in recognition of her efforts as an educator.
  • Dr A. Veena Shetty, Additional Professor, Department of Microbiology, was awarded the FIABMS TITLE Fellow Award by the Indian Association of Biomedical Scientists at the 42nd annual conference of IABMS held at Nitte (DU), between 25th to 27th November 2021.
  • Dr Saumya Srivastava, Associate Professor, was conferred the ‘Best Researcher’ award at the Sports Connect 4 Conference’ Incisive and Inclusive Rehabilitation’ held in Amritsar, Punjab, on 11th and 12 Dec 2021.
  • Ms Shellette D Almeida, Assistant Professor, has won the social excellence award and 1st prize in scientific paper presentation at the 1st GAPTCON (Global Association of Physiotherapists Conference) held in Delhi on 18th and 19th December 2021.
  • Prof. (Dr.) Amarshree A Shetty was recognized for her contribution, tireless efforts, and valuable role in assessing and counselling children in a child care home by Karnataka State Police, Mangalore city police for the year 2021
  • Dr Kumuda Rao was conferred the Global Faculty Award at the National level by AKS World Wide Pvt. Ltd

TARGETTED SUPPORT to ENCOURAGE WOMEN IN RESEARCH
BEST RESEARCHER AWARDS:
Prof. Suchetha Kumari N, Department of Biochemistry, was conferred the Best Researcher Award from Nitte (DU) and KSHEMA. Prof. Mrs Sujatha R, HOD, Dept. of Child Health Nursing, received the Best Researcher Award of NUINS.

CELEBRATING WOMANHOOD: INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATIONS
International women’s day was celebrated across various institutions with themes of relevance that celebrate womanhood.

NAARI TATTVA – 2021 to celebrate the essence of women, honour them and recognize their contributions & achievements in diverse sectors.


HELPLINE FOR STUDENTS
A round-the-clock helpline for the students of the University was initiated to reach out when in need of assistance on 21 May 2021.


EMPOWERING WOMEN WITH TRAINING IN SELF DEFENCE
The institutions took an innovative step towards the safety and security of female students and employees.

Resource persons were martial artist Mr Karthik S Kateel and his associate, Mrs Shobhalatha, from the ‘Swaraksha for Women Trust’, Mangalore. Demonstrations of different situations of assault & harassment, the presence of mind required at such times and the variou s techniques developed by Mr Karthik S Kateel to defend oneself.



HOLISTIC HEALTH AND WELLNESS
An online Yoga session for the students and staff was organized by the Nitte Institute of Speech and Hearing on International Yoga Day. The theme is ‘Yoga for well-being’ with an emphasis on overall well-being during the pandemic.


CHILDCARE FACILITIES FOR WOMEN STAFF AND STUDENTS:
Nitte (DU) o f f e r s childcare facilities for working and studying women on campus. The crèche functions from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm. Caretakers are available to look after the pre-schoolers for a full day or half day, depending on the requirements of the parents.


GENDER EQUALITY BEING ADDRESSED THROUGH EDUCATION
  • The seminar on ‘Women Health and Hygiene’- NUCSER was conducted on 25 Feb 2021. General hygiene for healthy living and stress on personal hygiene, especially during menstruation, was the seminar’s focus. The program provided a platform for the participants to clarify queries on many issues and dispelled many misbeliefs.
  • Guest talk titled “Women Empowerment”- Department of Management studies
  • CONDUCTED on 16 Mar 2021 Department of Management Shree Latha Vasisht, Corporate and Founder- of AADHYA AIRTEK, resource person.
  • Technical Workshop Girl Geeks 2021- NMAMIT. In association with IEEE Computer Society, Bangalore Chapter. A Workshop with Hands-on sessions for Students and Professionals was organized from 15 May 2021 to 5 Jun 2021.
  • Women Entrepreneurial Journey – Challenges & Success’- NUINS: A panel discussion on the topic was conducted on 2 Aug 2021 by The Student Innovation Club (SIC) & Nursing Education Unit (NEU).
  • A workshop titled “An Outlook on Child Rights and Acts”- KSHEMA: Conducted on 3 Sept 2021. The objective of the programme was to get an understanding of the Acts related to Child Rights. The Workshop focused on Acts such as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO Act 2012), Juvenile Justice Act 2015 (J J Act), Adoption Act and legal issues associated with adoption.
  • Insights and Innovations in Cyber Security- NMAMIT Conducted on 25 Oct 2021 by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in partnership with WISE (Women in Security Excelling) IBM and SUBEX IIC-NMIT.

RESEARCH FOR WOMEN BY THE WOMEN OF THE UNIVERSITY:
RESEARCH GRANTS:
Dr ChandrikaRao, Associate Professor of Pathology, has been awarded a grant of Rs. 22,99,544/- by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for her research project titled ‘Validation of RDT kit for screening of Anaemia among women of childbearing age group at field level in comparing with gold standard test in the rural area of coastal Karnataka”.

  • Epidemiology of malaria during pregnancy in Mangaluru city in the southwestern coastal region of India: co-authored by Dr Suchetha Kumari

  • Thrombosis of Both Umbilical Arteries of a Female Fetus in a Twin Gestation Causing Fetal Demise, co-authored by Bhat Shubha P, Sonkusare Shipra, Krishna Priya



    • PUBLICATION STATISTICS
      Women faculty and students have authored 339publications indexed in Scopus and Web of Science databases, with 30 publications in the highest quartile.

      GENDER EQUALITY IN THE SPOTLIGHT
      A collage competition was conducted for the constituent colleges of Nitte (DU) by the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Cell, ABSMIDS, in association with the Gender Sensitization Cell, Nitte (DU), with the help of the Gender Champions of the Nitte (DU).

      The topic of the collage-making competition was “SPOTLIGHT INITIATIVE” #WITHHER.

      The competition was conducted to create awareness among the students, faculty, and public about the Initiative, which aims to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.

      OUTREACH THROUGH TRAINING AND AWARENESS
      • A webinar on “Physiotherapists & Childbirth Education: Our Role & Contribution” was conducted by the Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy (NIPT) on 20 May 2021. A total of 100 delegates across the country participated in the Webinar.
      • FDP on ‘Gender Equity: Challenges and Opportunities for Women in Decision Making’ between 26 and 30 July 2021. The FDP included topics on Women’s Empowerment, some Neuroscience Initiatives, Workplace Diversity Contributing to Gender Wellness, Women in Education, Medicine and Nutrition in Diet, Women’s Mental Health, Women in Technology Migrant and refugee Women, Preventing and Combating Violence against Women, Emotional Intelligence, Cyber-Risk, Developing Resilience to Stress, Women and Pandemic.
      • An outreach programme on “Breast Cancer Awareness” at Sri Shakthi Mahila Mandali, Madyar, on 29 Oct 2021 was organized by the Obstetrics & Gynecological Nursing Department
      • Free Dental Screening Camp for children and pregnant women as a part of the Nutritional Health Camp organized by KSHEMA and ABSMIDS in Kadaba on 29 Oct 2021.
      • Dr Sahana Maben participated as the invited resource person for the training program for the 62 newly appointed Community Health Officers of Dakshina Kannada District on 20 Dec 2021 at Wenlock Government. It was jointly organized by the District Health and Family Welfare Department, District Reproductive and Child Health Department and National Oral Health Program, Dakshina Kannada, in association with A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences.
