INTRODUCTION

Educational institutions are in the best position to inculcate a positive attitude towards sustainable lifestyle habits in students during their developing years. The practices and lifestyle adopted during the young age will have positive impact on their attitude and decisions they make in their future regarding their career and personal life. SDG 9 i.e. Industry Innovation and Infrastructure have a major impact on every individual as well as the community in whole. Innovation is the key need of the hour with respect to progress of every country. Nitte (DU) provides the platform for idea generation, creating ample to innovate, incubate and become self-reliant. The university is working in close collaboration with Government of India by participating in its flagship program of Atal Innovation Mission to promote and create a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship amongst students and faculty.

Administrative support:
Nitte (DU) provides a conducive environment to encourage research, innovation and entrepreneurship that can translate into an industry. We engage and instil entrepreneurial mindset in young students. We also provide the necessary support in their first step towards entrepreneurship. The university support systems to achieve the above-mentioned agenda is as follows:
  • DST-NUTEC: Nitte University Technology Enabling Centre (DST NU-TEC) is one among the 10 centres established at the national level by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. DST has provided the support for setting up state-of-art networking infrastructural facilities to the centre. The objective of TEC will be to create an ecosystem for technology development in the universities and provide a platform to network researchers with other institutes, national laboratories and industries in the region and to address the local needs through scientific intervention for sustainable solutions.
  • Institution Innovation Council: Nitte (DU) has launched the Institution Innovation Council (IIC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Government of India. IIC is creating an ecosystem that will foster the culture of innovation across all the constituent colleges of Nitte (DU), from generating ideas, to pre-incubation, incubation and graduating from the incubator as successful start-ups.
  • The Nitte Incubation Centre (supported by NITI Aayog under the Atal Innovation Mission): aims to accelerate the country’s entrepreneurial vision by encouraging and assisting innovative entrepreneurs through valuable mentorship and access to investor networks and by facilitating a host of other services. Starting its operation on June 01, 2020, the centre has supported 70+ innovative start-ups in the areas of
    1. Agriculture and allied activities
    2. Health Science
    3. Information and Communication
    Technologies
AIC-NITTE offers valuable in-house resources and academic-industry collaborations to develop applications and programs to realise the dreams of young entrepreneurs to create a viable business venture. The AIC Nitte is among a few reputed incubators selected by the Govt. of India to provide seed funding to innovative start-ups under the Start-up India Seed Fund Scheme. The centre has so far distributed seed funds up to 200 lakhs to eligible start-ups.

The Centre supports the existing MSMEs in the region through appropriate intervention strategies like training, consultancy & mentoring, business development, diversification, technology transfer & upgradation. The Centre has been approved as a technical agency by the Ministry of MSME to develop food processing clusters. AIC Nitte is the only Incubation Centre in the country recognised by the Govt. as a Resource Centre for the formation and incubation of Farmer Producer Companies under the Centre Scheme of 10,000 FPOs. Currently, 10 farmer- produce companies are formed and incubated by AIC Nitte.

1. Webinar on “IPR with a focus on patenting in India-22.01.2021: Dr I. Karunasagar, addressed the audience on all types of Intellectual Property Rights with a focus on patenting in India with appropriate examples.


He explained copyrights, trademark, designs, geographical indication, TRIPS and territorial jurisdiction. Information on legislative framework for IPR in India and salient features of patent law was presented. He also summarized pathways of getting International patents through Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).

2. Medical Hackathon 2021 - 6.03.2021: was organized by Nitte Atal Incubation Centre in association with the Institute Innovation Council (IIC) of Nitte (DU). The event was coordinated by NU-TEC at the University auditorium premises followed by an interactive meeting and discussion with Prof Dr Iddya Karunasagar at DST NU-TEC centre.


The theme of the Hackathon was centred on solving the most impactful problems in healthcare which was relevant to the prevailing pandemic situation. A galaxy of healthcare experts from various departments of KSHEMA that included ENT, OBG, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Anaesthesiology, Psychiatry, Internal medicine and Cardiology addressed the budding, enthusiastic technocrats. Prof Dr Satheesh Kumar Bhandary Hon’ble Vice Chancellor enlightened the audience on the need for this hackathon. The event was presided over by Prof Dr Shantharam Shetty. Young research enthusiasts and entrepreneurs participated and interacted with Dr Iddya Karunasagar who explained the role of DST TEC in mentoring.

3. Webinar on “Entrepreneurship and start up ecosystem in campuses-22.03.3021:


Webinar on “Entrepreneurship and start up ecosystem in campuses” was organized under DST-NUTEC platform on March 22, 2021. Keynote speaker of the webinar Prof S. Ganga, Mentor-in-Residence, Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, IIT Mumbai, explained about CAWACH (Centre for Augmenting WAR with COVID-19 Health crisis) rapid response system model in connection with the start-ups that was created at the time COVID-19 crisis. Prof S Ganga gave updates on various policies available for the start-ups, challenges faced by start-ups, steps involved in technology transfer from lab to market.

4. Ethics in Biomedical and Health Research: Perception and Practice- 05.07.2021 to 08.07.2021: DST NU-TEC & NUCSER hosted a National training workshop on Ethics in Biomedical and Health Research: Perception and Practice from 5 - 8 July 2021 with a record registration of >1000 candidates from all over India including few members from outside the country reflecting the utility of knowledge expected to be accrued through this programme.

5. Webinar on IPR in Biotechnology – 06.10.2021: A talk on ‘IPR in biotechnology area’ was organized by DST NU-TEC platform on 6 October, 2021. The speaker of the session, Ms Mahuva Shetty, is a trade mark attorney at Mangaluru.

The session was moderated by Dr Iddya Karunasagar. Speaker Ms Mahuva Shetty introduced the topic to the intellectual property rights, patents, trademarks, copyrights, geographical indicators, semiconductor integrated circuit layout- design, plant variety protection and how biodiversity protection and implementation policies work.

A three-day Healthcare Innovation Hackathon organized by AIC-Nitte and IIC- Nitte DU was inaugurated by Shri N.Vinaya Hegde, Chancellor, Nitte DU on March 25, 2021. The Student Innovation Club (SIC) & Nursing Education Unit (NEU), Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences, in collaboration with the Staff Development Centre, Nitte (Deemed to be University), organized a national level webinar on ‘Nursing Your Entrepreneurship Dreams’ on March 26, 2021.

The Institution Innovation Council, Nitte DU, in association with Student Innovation Club of NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences organized an Inter-collegiate Debate on the topic - ‘Medical Oxygen, Medicine, Ventilators & Vaccine shortage - Real or Artificial?’ on May 17, 2021.

9. Inter-Collegiate E-Poster Competition on Covid-19 – 28-05-2021:

An Inter-Collegiate E-Poster Competition was organized by IIC-Nitte DU along with Student Innovation Club of Medical Imaging Technology, KSHEMA on May 28, 2021. Students from the constituent colleges of the University participated in the event.

10. Panel Discussion with Industry Experts- 21-05-2021:

A virtual panel discussion - ‘Medical Oxygen- Issues and way forward’ was organized by the Institution Innovation Council (IIC) on Friday, May 21, 2021. Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice-Chancellor, Nitte DU inaugurated the event. Industry experts from private and government sectors constituted the panel.

11. Online Media Panel Discussion- 04-06- 2021:

A live media panel discussion on ‘Role of media during the COVID-19 pandemic situation’ was organized by the Institution Innovation Council, Nitte DU and Nitte Institute of Communication (NICO) on June 4, 2021. Journalists from various media organizations and academicians participated in the event.

12. Webinar on Entrepreneurial Opportunities for Dentists- 24-06-2021:
Webinar on ‘Changing landscapes of healthcare industry and entrepreneurial

opportunities for dentists’ was conducted by A.B.Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences and IIC - Nitte DU on June 24, 2021. The chief guest Dr. Ashok Khandelwal, Acting President of Dental Council of India gave the inaugural address. Dr. Rajeev Chitguppi, Research & Marketing Head at ICPA Health Products Ltd., Mumbai delivered the guest lecture. Prof. Dr.U.S. Krishna Nayak, Principal and Dean, ABSMIDS welcomed the gathering.

13. Webinar on Challenges Faced by Innovators- 30-06-2021:
A.B.Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences along with IIC-Nitte DU organized a Webinar on ‘Yes, we can and we will’ on June 30, 2021. Senior Consultant Periodontist Dr.A.Kumaraswamy was the resource person. Vice-Chancellor Dr.Satheesh Kumar Bhandary delivered inaugural speech. Dr.Renita Castelino coordinated the event.

14. Ambassador Training Program – June-July 2021:
The teaching and non-teaching staff of Nitte (DU) attended the Innovative Ambassador

program hosted by the Department of Education, Government of India from 30th June to 31st July 2021. The program gave insights to the participants on generation of ideas, new thinking methodologies, scope of innovation, incubating and marketing the innovations.

15. Impact Lecture Series 1 - 12-07-2021:

The lecture on Innovation and Entrepreneurship was organized by the Students Innovation Club, Nitte Gulabi Shetty Memorial Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (NGSMIPS) on July 12, 2021. Session 1 was conducted on ‘Clinical and Translational Research Opportunities on Post-Acute Sequelae of Covid-19’. Dr. Bellur S. Prabhakar, Associate Dean for Technology Innovation & Training, University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago was the speaker. Session 2 was conducted on ‘Decoding Entrepreneurship, A 360° View’. Mr. Harish K Jain, Director, Embiotic Laboratories Pvt. Ltd. was the speaker.

16. Impact Lecture Series 2- 24-07-2021:

The lecture on Innovation and Entrepreneurship was organized by Students Innovation Club, Nitte Gulabi Shetty Memorial Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (NGSMIPS) on July 24, 2021. Session 1 was conducted on ‘Biomedical Innovations in India - A Perspective’. Dr.Ravi C Nayar, Consultant Otolaryngologist, Sakra Premium Clinic, Sharjapur Road, Bengaluru was the speaker. Session 2 was conducted on ‘Opportunity and Challenges in Biotechnology Entrepreneurship’. Dr. Jitendra Kumar, Managing Director, Bangalore Bio Innovation Centre (BBC), Bengaluru was the speaker.

17. Panel Discussion on ‘Women Entrepreneurial Journey’ – 02-08-2021:

A Panel Discussion on ‘Women Entrepreneurial Journey – Challenges and Success’ was organized by Students Innovation Club, NUINS on August 2, 2021. Ms.Vathika Pai, Proprietor, Vathika International Travels Mangalore, Ms. Tanuja Maben, Director, Forrader Akademi, Manipal, Mrs. Reshma Sayed, Managing Partner, Themes Boutique, Udupi, Ms.Anusha Shetty, Founder, Dolce Desserts were present.

18. World Entrepreneurs’ Day – 31-08-2021:

World Entrepreneurs’ Day was organized by the Students Innovation Club, Nitte Gulabi Shetty Memorial Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (NGSMIPS), on August 31, 2021. The theme of the program was’ Entrepreneurial Opportunities in Healthcare’. Dr. Shiv Prakash Rathnam, Managing Director of Synchron Research Services Pvt. Ltd., Ahmedabad spoke on ‘Impetus for developing entrepreneurial mindset among students and faculty’.

19. Panel Discussion on Entrepreneurial Opportunities in Healthcare- 31-08-2021:
A panel discussion on Entrepreneurial Opportunities in Healthcare was organized by the Student Innovation Club of KSHEMA on August 31, 2021. Prof.Jagadeesh Chaturvedi, ENT Surgeon and Dr.Rekha Bhandarkar, Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte spoke on the topic.

20. National Innovation and India Startup Day – 21-10-2021:

Nitte DU celebrated National Innovation and India Startup Day on October 21, 2021. A webinar on the above topic was organized and the resource person was Dr. A.P Achar, CEO, Atal Incubation Centre, Nitte. Dr.Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice- Chancellor of Nitte (DU) inaugurated the event. Prof.G.Srinikethan, President of IIC presided over the program.

21. Talk on Contribution of Private Universities in India – 11-11-2021:

Institution Innovation Council (IIC) in association with A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences (ABSMIDS), Nitte (DU) organized a talk on ‘Contribution of Private Universities to Indian Higher Education Ecosystem’ on the occasion of National Education Day on November 11, 2021. 22. Special Lecture on Technical Writing – 15- 11-2021:

A virtual special lecture and interaction programme on ‘A guide to New Trends and Innovations in Technical Writing’ was organized by the Institution Innovation Council (IIC) in association with the Nitte Institute of Communication (NICO) on November 15, 2021. Ms.Usha Mandya, Senior Technical Writer, Docker INC, Cambridge, UK and Ms. Radhika Puthiyetath, Principal Technical Writer, Sysdig, San Francisco, USA jointly delivered the session.

23. Talk on Challenges in Bio-Entrepreneurship – 18-11-2021:

25. Workshop on “Who is your customer” – 04.01.2021:
A workshop was conducted by AIC to educate entrepreneurs regarding identifying the target audience of any venture. Mr. Cany Mendonsa, Marketing head, Inland builders delivered an educative talk on how to find a target customer, how to create a customer for the brand.

26. Workshop on achieving Product fit or Market fit- 15.01.2021: Workshop was conducted by AIC to help startups to achieve Product-Market fit. Resource person Mr. R Ganesh Rayala, Director, T HUB, gave insights on identifying target audience and serving them with the right product. He also stated that startups should research the target customers before going in depth of choosing a product.

A program was conducted by AIC to help entrepreneurs to understand entrepreneurial strategies and tools to run the start-ups. 28. Training & capacity building program for CEO and directors of FPO- 18.02.2021 and 19.0.2021:
Training & Capacity building program for CEO’s & Board of Directors of FPO’s was held on February 18th, 2021 10:00 in AIC Nitte Conference room. Welcome address was delivered by Dr. A. P. Achar and the Inaugural address was given by Sri. Manjunath, Sr. Consultant, CoE-FPO Bengaluru. Introduction & Context setting was given by Dr. K.J.Parameshwarappa Sr. Consultant, CoE-FPO Bengaluru. Basics of FPO and Advantages of FPOs for collectivizing farmers Dr. Ashok S.Alur, Director, CoE-FPO Bengaluru. The session concluded with all the participants sharing their thoughts and clearing their doubts about the operation of the FPO.

30. Pre-incubation program for early stage startups - “Product Management” - 26.06.2021:
AIC-Nitte has organised a Workshop on Digital Marketing by Eminent Speaker Mr. Praveen Dorna on 26th June, 2021. The speaker gave insights need of product management.

31. Workshop on Innovation Management - 19.06.2021:
AIC conducted a workshop with an objective to know the different aspects of Innovation Management. The resource person Mr. Cany Mendonsa, Marketing Head, Inland Builders, gave insights on innovation management.

32. Round-Table Discussion on “Promotion of Startups in Karavali Region:
Challenges and Solutions” was organized jointly by AIC Nitte Incubation Centre, KCCI and Karnataka Bank at KCCI meeting hall in Bunder on 05/10/2021. The discussion was carried out on the topic ‘Kaun Banega Udyamapati’ Contest a boost to the start- up ecosystem for young entrepreneurs in the Karavali region three district of coastal Karnataka.

The title of the thesis was ‘Effects of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation on Upper Limb Functions in Spastic Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy Children-Randomized Controlled Trial’.
  • Mrs. Haripriya S, Researcher from the faculty of Allied Sciences has been awarded the Ph.D Degree under the guidance of Dr. Dhanesh Kumar, NIPT. The title of the thesis was ‘The Influence of Cognitive Status on the Outcome of a Multi-Component Exercise Program in Community Dwelling Elderly Individuals.
  • Mrs. Anupama Karanth P, Researcher from the faculty of Biological Sciences has been awarded the Ph.D Degree under the guidance of Dr. Biswajit Maiti, NUCSER. The title of the thesis was ‘Development of loop- mediated isothermal amplification (lamp) assay for the sensitive detection of Vibrio parahaemolyticus’.

  • 1. Demystifying IPR and how to publish in good journals - 02.02.2021: Prof Dr Iddya Karunasagar gave a talk on “Demystifying IPR and how to publish in good journals” at Canara engineering college on 2 Feb 2021. The presentation focused on regulatory framework for patenting in India, eligibility for grant of patents, examples of product and process patents, steps involved in filing a patent application, tips for carrying out “prior art search” and “Why should one publish? Is there something worth publishing? Does the work add to any existing knowledge?”
  • 2. Apathbandhu: Nitte Smart Health Village Project – 04-05-08-2021: As a part of Nitte Smart Health Village Project ‘Apathbandhu’, Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences, Nu-MEDISiM, and Department of Public Health, KSHEMA jointly organized a training program for rural volunteers in first aid and emergency care, and launched ‘CoviSwas’ - Nitte Covid-19 Home Isolation App on August 4 and 5, 2021 at the Atal Incubation Centre, Nitte, Karkala. The program was inaugurated by Shri.N.Vinaya Hegde, Chancellor, Nitte (Deemed to be University). Dr.Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice- Chancellor of Nitte DU presided over the function.
  • 3. Phase 2 of Ideation drive 2020 on 12.06.2021: Critical thinking and creativity are the two most important aspects of innovation. With this motive DST NU-TEC along with the IIC, Nitte (DU) launched the Phase 2 of ideation drive – 2020. A total of 33 projects from various institute’s including Nitte Meenakshi institute of technology, Bengaluru; Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) Sangli, Maharashtra; Gardencity University, Bengaluru; NMAMIT, Nitte; Yenepoya Institute of Technology, Mangaluru; Justice K S Hegde Institute of Management, Nitte; KS Hegde Medical Academy, Deralakatte; Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal; St Joseph Engineering College, Mangalore; Canara Engineering College; A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences; St Agnes College Mangalore; Anantrao Pawar College of Engineering & Research and Manipal School of Life Sciences. Projects submitted under different categories; 12 under digital heath 16 under health care and 5 under waste management. Projects were evaluated based on novelty, translational feasibility, application, differentiation from existing technology. 9 projects have been selected to be awarded cash price and for mentoring to be taken into the next phase. The centre congratulates all the innovative ideas that were submitted and offers to mentor the rest of the projects if the candidates are interested in taking them to the next level.

Kaun Banega Udyamapati Contest 2021: AIC NITTE Launched the “Kaun Banega Udyamapati Contest 2021” in association with Karnataka Bank and 10000 StartupsIndia as its event partner, a TV show on Namma Kudla News Channel which is going to be the next BIG HIGHLIGHT in Karnataka. 5 best ideas out of the top 25 were declared Udayamapatis on TV and awarded not only CASH PRIZES of up to INR 25 Lakhs as Seed Capital but also Free Incubation and Publicity for the period of One Year.
  • 5. AgriTech Hackathon - 06/03/2021 – 08/03/2021: AIC Nitte Incubation Centre conducted a three-day ‘Agritech Hackathon’ from March 6-8, 2021. Event was organized with objective to bring together individuals, businesses and educational institutions to find solutions to the challenges in the Agri sector. The contest offered an open platform to share ideas that can reshape the future and travel towards ‘Agri 4.0’. Program was launched on Jan 8th 2021 with 5 diverse Agri challenges which required a solution with the amalgamation of advanced technologies like IoT, AI/ML, Web applications etc.
  • 6. Pre-incubation program for early start ups- May –June 2021: AIC Nitte Pre-incubation Programme is designed to help the start-ups understand and apply the fundamentals of a start-up venture and come out with a structured business plan and share their business idea. The main objective of the programme is to empower aspiring entrepreneurs with the entrepreneurial mind-set and business skills necessary to create their venture. Thus a program was organised for eight weeks Pre-incubation programme for early-stage start-ups from May 18 – June 30, 2021. The programme consists of class sessions, one- on-one mentoring and reviews to provide the right direction to the entrepreneurs to develop a successful business model and take a start up to the next level by building more clarity and customer-focus. Innovation and technology transfer to industry: Industry collaboration of DST NUTEC: On 25 Feb 2021, a Technology Transfer Agreement was signed between Nitte (Deemed to be University) and M/S Eshanya Beverages for commercialization of a patented technology for production of beverages from betel leaf. Mr H S Sandeep Kumar, Promotor and Director, Eshanya Beverages and Dr Alka Kulkarni, Registrar, Nitte DU signed the agreement. DST NUTEC in house expert Dr. Mamatha B.S developed the technology and facilitated the production of beverages from betel leaf, which is rich in antioxidants and antimicrobial molecules. Betel leaf is also considered to act as a natural appetizer, digestive, mild stimulant, aphrodisiac and refreshing mastication. The technology was developed bearing in mind regulatory as well as consumer requirements. The product was evaluated by a team of organoleptic assessors as well as by analytical laboratory before release for commercialization. The product is expected to reach the market in a couple of months. M/S Eshanya Beverages is exploring even overseas market for the products.

    Ideation Drive in Health and Allied Sciences program was conducted on September 25, 2021. Dr.Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice- Chancellor of Nitte DU inaugurated the event and delivered the inaugural speech. Prof.G.Srinikethan, President of Institution Innovation Council (IIC) presided over the function. Prof.Iddya Karunasagar, Advisor, Research and Patents, Nitte DU gave insights about the camp.
