NO POVERTY

The "No Poverty" goal is a critical target within the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As an essential part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, this goal aims to eliminate extreme poverty and tackle the complex issues related to poverty in all its forms. By addressing social, economic, and environmental aspects, the "No Poverty" SDG strives to ensure everyone has access to basic needs, essential services, and equal opportunities for growth and prosperity. This SDG provides a framework for collective efforts to achieve a world free of poverty.

Nitte (Deemed to be University) is committed to combating poverty through various impactful initiatives, including offering quality education at no cost to financially disadvantaged students. Beyond educational support, Nitte (Deemed to be University) provides free dental treatment and health check-up camps for the underprivileged. These efforts aim to enhance the well-being of individuals below the poverty line by providing critical medical services they might otherwise lack. Through these initiatives, Nitte (Deemed to be University) works towards a more equitable society by offering educational opportunities and essential healthcare assistance to those in need.




PROACTIVE STEPS TAKEN BY NU
Health:
  • Nitte (Deemed to be University) Free Dental Check-ups and Treatment Camps are crucial in providing essential dental care services to economically disadvantaged individuals who may face barriers to accessing proper oral health facilities. These camps offer free dental check-ups and treatments, alleviating the financial burden associated with dental care and ensuring that individuals below the poverty line can receive necessary oral health services. By facilitating access to dental care, Nitte (Deemed to be University) contributes significantly to breaking the cycle of poverty. These initiatives address health-related challenges and enhance the quality of life for marginalized individuals and communities.
  • The Department of Community Medicine, KSHEMA, organized a visit to Vathsalyadhama Ashrama, Kodialbail, on August 30, 2023. The Interns and Medical Social Worker, Mr. Santhosh NP, along with the Medical Officer Dr. Raksha of Kadri, UHTC, visited the old-age home to provide free medical check-ups to the elderly residents and to assess their health conditions.   • Blood donation camps are organized on regular basis, and it is reducing healthcare costs for the economically backward section of society by ensuring access to safe blood.
  • Ÿ Free immunization drive: University ensures that children from economically poor background receive essential vaccines for free according to the national schedule.
  • Outreach program on health education: Interns visit local households, educating residents on causes of hypertension, adverse effects, prevention, and the necessity of regular blood pressure checks. During the visit, they measured residents' blood pressure and emphasized the importance of dietary salt restriction, regular physical activity, and the intake of fruits and vegetables. The benefits of daily brisk walking, maintaining a disciplined lifestyle, reducing stress through positive relationships, and avoiding smoking and alcohol were highlighted as measures to manage hypertension.
  • Apathbandhu: A training program for rural volunteers in first aid & emergency care conducted 'APATHBANDHU,' a first aid and emergency care training program for rural volunteers from Thokur village on March 28-29, 2023, sponsored by MRPLONGC, Mangalore. The faculty trained 15 volunteers in emergency care skills such as CPR, wound dressing, and trauma care.
  • On April 28, 2023, the students of Nitte Institute of Communication, in collaboration with Nitte Special Child Care (N-SPECC) and A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, organized a one-day program to observe World Autism Day at the Institute premises. A total of 10 children and several adults with autism were the beneficiary of the initiatives

UNIQUE INITIATIVES
Helping hand:
On April 26th, 2023, a social outreach program titled "Holding HandsSahay Hasta" was organized by the Nitte Institute of Hospitality Services to celebrate International Hospitality Day. The event took place at Veronica Vihar Ashram, Maryhill, and was inaugurated by Varun Raj, Head of the Holding Hands Foundation, with artist and singer Maim Ramdas as the guest of honor.


Joy of Giving:
Under Team Eventrra's annual social responsibility initiative, "Joy of Giving," student coordinator Ms. Simony Shetty and faculty coordinator Prof. Karthik Kudroli selected Government Higher Primary School in Kemannu, Nitte, as the recipient of donations that included books, stationery, auto rickshaw fare, and raincoats. A total of 52 students benefited from this effort. To support this initiative, Rs. 60,000 was raised from the students of JKSHIM through events such as Freshers Day and Rose Day.


ANNA-DAANA:
  • Rice donation drive is launched by the university. The initiative aligns with the club's name, "ANNA-DAANA," meaning "Donating Rice." Demonstrating remarkable dedication, the Annadaana Club collected 400 kilograms of rice to support various deserving institutions in the Karkala region. On this charitable mission, 100 kilograms of rice were donated to each of the following organizations: Devditha Old Age Home, Kedinje, Chetana Special School, Vijetha Special School, and Suraksha Seva Ashram.
  • On April 2, 2023, student volunteers from the Annadaana Club at NMAMIT visited Sneha Deep Home for Children in Kapikad, Mangaluru, where they donated groceries and other essential items to the orphanage. During their visit, the students engaged with the children and organized various activities for them. This program benefited 27 orphaned children affected by HIV who reside at Sneha Deep.




Unused Paper Donation:
As a part of the community outreach program, Aura and Authorcraft Clubs of NMAMIT, Nitte handed over 111 bundles of unused paper on 18th November 2023 to Vijetha Special School, Karkala for making books for children. This initiative aims to support the school in making books for children and enhancing their educational resources.



Spreading Smiles and Joy:
On November 17, 2023, the NSS unit of the NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences celebrated Children's Day at De Mercede Orphanage in Paneer. The celebration involved donating cash and essential items, including clothing, stationery kits, groceries, and food, to the orphanage. Students and NSS volunteers distributed sweets and candies to the children, adding joy and cheer to the occasion. This initiative underscored the importance of community support and the spirit of giving, making a meaningful impact on the lives of the orphanage residents.


Empowering Accessibility: Aistribution of Mobility aids:
On World Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed on December 3, 2023, wheelchairs, rollator walkers, and airbeds were distributed to beneficiaries at a special program organized by AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences in association with Nitte Special Children's Child Care Centre, the Department of Preventive Dentistry, and DK District Comprehensive Education Karnataka.
