Nitte (Deemed to be University)'s SDG 2 Zero hunger report showcases a range of initiatives aimed at addressing hunger and enhancing food security through practical and sustainable approaches. These initiatives reflect the commitment to making improvements in community well-being and nutritional access with local solutions to hunger, providing essential support to institutions in need. Simultaneously, scientific innovations demonstrate how research can contribute to healthier food alternatives that are also environmentally sustainable.

The university's focus on food safety through research showcases its dedication to ensuring the quality and security of global food supplies. These initiatives not only address current challenges but also lay a foundation for long-term food security through education and community engagement.

World Food Day - 2024

The DST Technology Centre, Nitte DU and Nitte University Centre for Science Education and Research (NUCSER) jointly celebrated World Food Day 2024 on 16th October 2024 at the Seminar Hall in NUCSER. The theme for this year was ‘Right to food for a better life and a better future’. Dr. Vinod Kumar M.G. from Radboud University Medical Centre in Nijmegen, Netherlands, inaugurated the program and highlighted the importance of research in addressing challenges in the food sector, as well as the significance of the gut microbiome on individual health. Around 120 participants, including faculty, research scholars, and students, benefited from the program.

NUCSER conducts HACCP Training program

The Department of Food Safety and Nutrition, NUCSER organised a 3-day training program on Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and ISO 22000 Internal Audit from 8th to 10th February 2024. The workshop was inaugurated by Prof Dr Iddya Karunasagar, Advisor (Research & Patents). The participants learnt about the various aspects of HACCP and internal audit like hazard analysis plan, HACCP team planning, product validation, audit interviews and case studies during the 3-day training program.

Culinary Nexus 2024:

Nitte Institute of Hospitality Services (NIHS), a constituent college of Nitte University, hosted the chefs conclave Culinary Nexus 2024: Tasting Tomorrow on November 8, 2024, at the Padil campus, Mangaluru. The event focused on the future of food, sustainability, and innovative culinary practices. Key topics included the farm-to-table approach and its environmental, economic, and health impact; the use of indigenous ingredients in modern gastronomy to enhance flavor and sustainability; zero-waste kitchen strategies for minimizing food waste through conscious sourcing and preparation; and plant-based innovations that showcased emerging trends in sustainable cuisine. The conclave featured expert-led talks and interactive demonstrations, offering participants valuable insightsinto the evolving world of sustainable culinary arts. Poshan Diwas 2024

As part of National Nutrition Week, the NSS unit of NUCSER organized a community outreach program on 4th September 2024 at Government Higher Primary School, Bagambila, to commemorate Poshan Diwas. The event aimed to raise awareness about nutrition and healthy eating habits among school children. Students were educated on the key components of a nutritious diet, including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals.

NSS Special Camp for Government School Children

The NSS Unit of NUCSER successfully organized a five-day camp from 12th to 16th November 2024 at Government Higher Primary School, Padpu Bajal, Mangaluru. The camp was designed to engage students from Classes 1 to 8 in a variety of activities, focusing on their holistic development. A total of 120 students from the school benefited from the special camp.

NITTE-NAMASTE CONCLAVE 2024

The NAMASTE Centre at the Nitte University along with the faculty of NUCSER, organized a 2-day National Conference on "Health, Food Security and Environment in North East India: Issues & Challenges" on 1st & 2nd March 2024 at the university campus, Mangalore. A total of 301 delegates including faculty, research scholars and students participated in the conference.

NU-Trifit’s – 2024

As a part of SDG-2 NU-Trifit’s Anemia Awareness Program, in collaboration with the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, JKSHCH, Nitte (Deemed to be University), was successfully held at the Anganwadi of Kotekar Panchayat during Nutrition Week 2024. The mothers actively participated, preparing over 20 nutritious meals, and expressed their gratitude for the knowledge gained. The event saw a turnout of 22 mothers and 2 fathers, who attended on behalf of those unable to make it due to work or illness, along with their children.

The Department of Child Health Nursing, NUINS held a mass health education session on "Breastfeeding" on 2nd August 2024 at Shri Kshethra Dharmastala Rural Development Project office, Falnir, Mangaluru, as part of the World Breastfeeding Week Celebrations 2024.

RASTRIYA POSHAN MAHA: VISIT TO NAMS SNEHASADAN

The NSS unit of Nitte College of Pharmaceutical and Sciences had the wonderful opportunity to visit NAMS Snehasadan, an orphanage and old age home on September 14, 2024. The event was centred around the theme Nutrition and "Poshan Bhi Padhai Bhi," where we focused on the importance of nutrition. During our visit, we engaged with the residents by explaining key concepts of healthy eating and nutrition. In addition to the educational component, we distributed essential items including pens, books, fruits, and various food items to meet the residents' needs.

Promote sustainable agriculture

NUCSER signs MoU with Medorganics India Pvt Ltd, Karnataka

NUCSER signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Medorganics India Private Limited (MOI), a division of Meditek India. MOI is a state-of-the-art facility, manufacturing Ayurvedic, Herbal and Nutritional products located at Baikampady Industrial Area, Mangaluru (Karnataka). The signing ceremony was held on 17th February 2024 in the presence of Prof. Dr. Harsha Halahalli, Registrar, Nitte (DU) at the University Enclave, Deralakatte.

The Nitte Agri-business Conclave 2024

The conclave was inaugurated by Dr. S. Glory Swarupa, Director General of the National Institute of MSME Hyderabad. Distinguished guests included Mr. Sangeetha DGM of NABARD and Mr. Srjeeth Regional Head of Canara Bank. Dr. Swarupa emphasized the pivotal role of the Ministry of MSME in fostering cluster development and supporting micro-entrepreneurs in achieving better market positioning and pricing for their products.



March 15, 2024:

The sessions focused on registration, health, and nutritional benefits of jackfruit, value addition through modern technologies, and the role of FPOs in promoting jackfruit. Success stories in jackfruit utilization were shared by entrepreneurs.



March 16, 2024:

Discussions covered entrepreneurial avenues in jackfruit processing and the market potential for value-added products. The event also facilitated institutional support for startups and provided networking opportunities between buyers and sellers. An agri-startup meet was held during the conclave.

Exhibition:The conclave provided a platform for over 100 micro-entrepreneurs to exhibit and market their ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook jackfruit value-added products.Business Opportunities – Buyer-Seller Meet:A dedicated session facilitated interactions between potential buyers and sellers to discuss product showcasing, pricing negotiations, order placements, and logistical arrangements, thereby fostering business relationships within the jackfruit value-added industry.

Event Outcomes:The Nitte Jackfruit Conclave successfully established a global network to promote elite jackfruit varieties. It provided insights into domestic and international market scenarios for jackfruit, facilitated knowledge transfer and technology adoption for commercializing jackfruit as an organic crop, and developed strategies to enhance the supply chain, value addition, and marketing efforts to boost state revenue.
