The Global Goals SDG 5 aims to achieve gender equality and empower allwomenandgirls.This goal is essential for ensuring that women and girls are offered equal rights and opportunities across all sectors of society.In a society where violence and injustice against women persist increasing women's leadership roles and investments in gender equality are crucial at national, regional, and global levels. Nitte University is a leading institution in promoting gender equality, with women comprising 66% of its student body and 72% of its workforce.The university has implemented various initiatives to ensure a safe and empowering environment for women, including surveillance systems, free transportation, counseling services, and day-care centers.Women hold significant leadership positions within the university, such as Deputy Registrar and Director of staff Development.Additionally, Nitte University supports women's professional growth through research funding and empowerment programs.

GENDER EQUALITY IN THE SPOTLIGHT
- Dr Ananya from the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology has secured 1st place in the ‘Epiphany Competition’on the occasion of World Mental Health Day conducted by the Department of Psychiatry KSHEMA on 10th October 2024.
- Dr Sonika from the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiologyreceived Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degree on 16th November 2024 for her thesis titled Evaluation and Correlation of Dermatoglyphic Patterns with Skeletal Malocclusions under the guidance of Late Prof. (Dr.) U S Krishna Nayak.
- Prof. Anusha successfully defended her PhD at MS Ramaiah Research Centre, earning her doctorate degree on 30/12/2024.
- Prof. Dr. Fatima Dsilva, Principal, Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences for received the Best Researcher Award & Best Paper Award at the institutional level for the year 2023-2024.

- Dr. Neetha Kamath, Head, Department of Community Health Nursing for received the Nitte Distinguished Best Teacher Awarded the institutional level for 2023-2024.
- Ms. Shivangi Dwivedi successfully defended her dissertation under the guidance of Dr. Anurag Sharma, titled “Study on the environmental chemical(s) induced cellular and organismal stress response in Drosophila melanogaster” on 3rd June, 2024.
- Prof Dr Mithra N Hegde was awarded the Aesthetic Dentistry Association of India (ADAI) Founder President Award during the 2nd ADAI National Conference on the 11th, 12th and 13th of July 2024 for her outstanding contribution to ADAI.
- Dr IndraniKarunasagar, Director Projects & NUTECwas invited to join the Advisory Board of IDSSD, UNESCO, Paris as a representative of herself and Nitte University.She was placed amongst the top 0.5% scholars worldwide and also got featured in Scholar GPS for her notable contributions in microbiology and various other disciplines andrecognized among the Stanford / Elsevier Top 2% Scientists Lists 2024 in the field of microbiology.

- Ar. Rohini, a core member of YOUNGO's ‘Women and Gender Working Group’, co-authors and submitted the ’Gender Action Plan’ policy document for India to the UNFCCC, marking a significant step towards addressing gender issues in climate action, officially showcased on the UNFCCC platform from 4th April 2024.
- Sanjana Upadhya, 1st year B Tech student & a national player, NMAMIT bagged the first position and the best player title at Nitte University Intercollegiate Shuttle Badminton Match held at Deralakatte, Mangalore.

NITTE PROVIDES A SAFE HAVEN FOR WOMEN:
1. Refresher Course for Nurses, Housekeeping staff & other hospital staff of JKSHCH
Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital in collaboration with the Staff Development Centre, NitteDU organized a training program on Hospital Policies, Infection Prevention and Control, SOPs, NABH standards, and fire safety. The training program was scheduled for 1st Feb 2024 to 12th Feb 2024 for Hospital Staff, 13th Feb to 29th Feb 2024 for Housekeeping Staff, and 4th March to 20th March 2024 for Nursing Staff

2. Workshop on Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH)
- A Faculty Development Program on “Building Resilience: Strategies for Coping with Stress” was conducted for the teaching staff of NSFTID, Bangalore, led by Ms. Varsha Karthikeyan from CETC. She introduced the ABC (Awareness, Balance, Control) model and addressed common myths about stress. Additionally,
- The Staff Development Centre, in collaboration with the Internal Complaints Committee and Gender Sensitization Cell, organized the NitteDUPoSH Series - I (NUPS I) on 29th and 31st May 2024 for teaching and non-teaching staff across Mangalore and off-campus institute.

3. ‘Self-Defence Training Programme – Swaraksha For Women’
- The Gender Sensitization Cell of AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Nitte (Deemed to be University) organized a ‘Self-Defence Training Programme – Swaraksha For Women’ for students of Nitte DU on 15th November 2024 and was conducted by Martial artist Mr. Karthik S. 4. Programs on “Laws Concerning Women’s Protection And Empowerment”
- Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences (NUINS), in collaboration with the Women's Cell of NUINS, organized a guest lecture on "Laws Concerning Women's Protection and Empowerment" on 30th December 2024.
- The NSS Annual Special Camp, organized by the NSS Unit of Nitte Institute of Professional Education (NIPE) from 27th December 2024 to 2nd January 2025 at Dr. MRSM English Medium School, Thokur focused on communicating the Sustainable Development Goals.Key moments included a rally on breast cancer awareness and a lecture on “MY SECURITY- MY PRIORITY “delivered by Dr. Ruksana Hassan

Programs for women safety, awareness and rights
- The IQAC Criterion VII and Women’s Cell of NUINS organized a guest lecture as part of the Amrit Kaal - Vimarsh - Viksit Bharat 2047 public lecture series, on 6th March 2024 at the University Auditorium, Paneer campus. The theme was Rising Nari Shakti - Women Empowerment in India (Theme 4).

WORKSHOPS AND OTHER PROGRAMS INVOLVING WOMEN:
1. NitteDU actively participated in the national workshop titled ‘Women Leaders: Shaping Academic Excellence for VIKSIT Bharat @ 2047’ held on 13th December 2024 at the IIT campus, New Delhi. Organized by the University Grants Commission – MoE, the one-day event brought together representatives from over 100 universities across India. Reaffirming its commitment to women’s leadership and gender equality in academia, NitteDU was represented by Dr. Suma Ballal, Mrs. Vinutha Shetty, Dr. Rekha Bhandarkar, Dr. Fatima D’Silva, and Mrs. Veena B K.

2. The International Nurses Day celebration at NUINS was organized by the Student Nurses Association (SNA) Student Council on 11th May 2024, under the global theme “Our Nurses, Our Future: The Economic Power of Care.”And Sr. Aileen Mathias, former Vice Principal of Athena College of Nursing and recipient of the Florence Nightingale Award, was the Chief Guest and was felicitated for her contributions to nursing.

3. Workshop on Respectful Maternity Care being carried out by Dept. of OBG with Aastrika Foundation
The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology in association with Aastrika Foundation organized a workshop on “Respectful Maternity Care” from 29th July to 1st August 2024 at New NUMEDISIM Lab of Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital. The aim of this workshop is to sensitise and create awareness among the staff of the organisation across all medical and nonmedical cadres working in the hospital to facilitate an empathetic and positive birthing experience for the mother.

4. World Breastfeeding Week
The Department of Paediatrics celebrated World Breastfeeding Week 2024 from 01st to 07th August 2024 at K S Hegde Charitable Hospital. The theme for this year was “Closing the gap: Breastfeeding support for all” The undergraduates and postgraduates actively participated in various activities, organized to celebrate this event. Poster competition was held on 2nd August and street play on 5th August.

Guest lecture by Transgender Women at NGSMIPS
A thought-provoking and insightful talk on "The Struggle of Trans and Gender Diverse Persons" was organised by NGSMIPS on December 14th, 2024, featuring a distinguished panel of guest speakers: Nikhila, Aishwarya, Ani, and Vrundha. The session aimed to highlight the challenges faced by transgender and gender-diverse individuals, offering valuable perspectives from those with lived experiences.

Various institutions under NitteDU celebrated International Women’s Day 2024 with enthusiasm and purposemarking a tribute to the achievements and progress of women in various spheres of life.
International Women’s Day 2024
