GENDER EQUALITY

The Global Goals SDG 5 aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. This goal is essential for ensuring that women and girls are offered equal rights and opportunities across all sectors of society. In a society where violence and injustice against women persist increasing women's leadership roles and investments in gender equality are crucial at national, regional, and global levels. Nitte University is a leading institution in promoting gender equality, with women comprising 66% of its student body and 72% of its workforce. The university has implemented various initiatives to ensure a safe and empowering environment for women, including surveillance systems, free transportation, counseling services, and day-care centers. Women hold significant leadership positions within the university, such as Deputy Registrar and Director of staff Development. Additionally, Nitte University supports women's professional growth through research funding and empowerment programs.

With the University’s’ Focus on diversity during recruitment and fair compensation and promotion procedures, there are women holding administrative and leadership posts in the university.

Ms. Soumyashree Bangera, Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Humanities at NMAMIT, Nitte was conferred the Excellence in Educational Leadership Award at the EduInspire National Awards 2025, organized by the Santosh Foundation in Hubballi on Teachers’ Day, 5th September 2025. The prestigious award recognizes Ms. Bangera’s outstanding contributions to educational leadership and her unwavering commitment to strengthening the academic community

Women staff and students of Nitte DU have been in the forefront of research, publications, presentations, academics and sports.

• Janvi D Shetty of Class 5 of Dr NSAM English Medium High School, took part in the English Story Narration Competition, “Echoes of Tomorrow” organised by the Kotak Education Foundation, was shortlisted and secured second place.
• Ms Diya Vinod, the school topper, Class X (2024-25) and her proud parents Mr Vinoda Achar and Ms Reshma Vinod were the guests of honour. On this special occasion, Diya was felicitated by the PTA of the school. She inspired the students with words on leadership and lifelong learning.



• Zaneta Velika Dsouza of III BTech (ECE) brought laurels to the institute and the Coastal Roller-Skating Club, Udupi, by winning 3 Gold medals at the 41st Karnataka Roller Skating Championship and Selection Trials 2025-26, organized by the Karnataka Roller Skating Association. The competition was held in Bengaluru from 5th to 8th November 2025.

the Staff Development Centre, in collaboration with Gender Sensitization Cell of various Institutions organized the NitteDU PoSH Series for teaching and non-teaching staff across Mangalore and off-campus institute.

The Gender Sensitization Cell of AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Nitte (Deemed to be University) organized a ‘Self-Defence Training Programme – Swaraksha For Women’ for students of Nitte DU on 11th November 2025 and was conducted by Martial artist Mr. Karthik S. Kateel and his associate, Mrs. Shobhalatha from the ‘Swaraksha for Women Trust’

Prof. (Dr.) Suma Ballal, Dy. Registrar, Nitte University, delivered a talk on 4th February 2025. The program was organized by the Gender Sensitization Cell and Vista Club of NMAMIT.

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecological Nursing, NUINS successfully conducted an outreach program on "Breast Cancer" at Kotekar Panchayath Auditorium on 11th March 2025 to raise awareness and educate women about breast cancer detection and prevention.

Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences organized a seminar on “Transforming Healthcare Delivery through Digital Health Innovation” on 20th March 2025. Smt. K. S. Bharati, Senior Consultant and former Joint Secretary of the Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi, was the eminent speaker.

Inaugurator Dr. Rahee Walambe, Assoc. Professor, Symbiosis Institute of Technology, Pune in her inaugural address, emphasized the importance of leadership in academia and encouraged women faculty to embrace innovation and mentorship

Various institutions under NitteDU celebrated International Women’s Day 2025 with enthusiasm and purpose marking a tribute to the achievements and progress of women in various spheres of life.

Visit to Bhagini Samaj Girls’ Orphanage, Jeppu, Mangalore. The objectives of the program were to raise awareness on sustainable menstrual hygiene and to provide them with essential items necessary for their studies and daily life.

NUCSER organized and proudly celebrated the International Day of Girls and Women in Science, designated by the United Nations to recognize women's critical role in science and technology on 14th February 2025. This day annually marks the resolution set by the United Nations in 2015 to celebrate women and girls in science and raise awareness of the gender gap in Science and Technology. Engaging events and activities like quizzes and poster-making competitions were organized to test the participants' knowledge in various fields of science and technology. The celebration's highlight was the felicitation of Dr Suchetha Kumari, Professor, Department of Biochemistry, recognising her significant contributions to the field of science. She was honoured for her outstanding achievements and inspiring journey, which serves as a role model for aspiring young scientists.
