Recognizing water as a finite resource, the University integrates conservation and equitable use across governance, campus planning, academics, research, healthcare, and community engagement. Its strategy centers on efficiency, reuse, innovation, inclusivity, and climate resilience. In 2025, the University expanded sewage treatment capacity, strengthened rainwater harvesting, enhanced stormwater systems, and improved access to safe drinking water and hygienic sanitation. Treated wastewater reuse, water-efficient technologies, and nature-based solutions reinforce long-term water security amid increasing climate pressures.

Beyond infrastructure, SDG 6 is embedded in curricula, interdisciplinary research, and capacity-building initiatives. Student-led awareness campaigns and community outreach programs further extend impact beyond campus boundaries. This report outlines the University's key initiatives, measurable progress, and future priorities in advancing clean water and sanitation, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to responsible water stewardship and sustainable development.

Nitte (Deemed to be University) adopts a proactive and systematic approach to advancing SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) by integrating water stewardship and sanitation management into institutional planning, infrastructure, academics, and community engagement. In response to water scarcity, climate variability, and public health challenges, the University implements strategic measures focused on conservation, efficiency, resilience, and inclusivity.



Strengthening Water and Sanitation Infrastructure

The University has developed strong water and sanitation infrastructure across its campuses, including multiple Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) that treat wastewater from academic, healthcare, and residential facilities using sustainable technologies. Treated wastewater is reused for flushing, landscaping, gardening, and cleaning, reducing freshwater dependence and supporting zero liquid discharge. Well-maintained and inclusive sanitation facilities, including washrooms for persons with disabilities, senior citizens, and children, are provided across campus. Strategically placed handwashing stations with water-efficient fixtures promote hygiene and public health in line with WHO guidelines.

Rainwater Harvesting and Stormwater Management

Nitte (Deemed to be University) has established an integrated rainwater management system that captures rooftop and surface runoff through dedicated pipelines, filtration units, and storage tanks for reuse in domestic and auxiliary applications. Separate stormwater drainage networks efficiently channel runoff, reducing flood risks, preventing soil erosion, and enhancing groundwater recharge. The campus landscape and topography are thoughtfully designed to support the natural flow of stormwater toward designated collection points, minimizing waterlogging while strengthening overall water resilience.

To further enhance water security, the University collaborates with external stakeholders to access rainwater from nearby storage ponds under formal agreements, contributing to broader regional conservation efforts. Additionally, the clear segregation of stormwater and sewage systems prevents rainwater from entering the wastewater network, thereby avoiding treatment plant overload and improving operational efficiency. Together, these measures reflect a coordinated, sustainable approach to water resource management.



Adherence to national water conservation standards in building design:

Nitte (Deemed to be University) integrates robust water conservation practices into the design and construction of its infrastructure, in strict accordance with the National Building Code of India (NBC 2016) and the standards outlined in IS 1172 and IS 2064. Additionally, the university ensures alignment with the Environmental Guidelines for Buildings issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Government of India, thereby reinforcing its commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible campus development.

The University enhances water-use efficiency by installing water-saving fixtures such as push-cock taps, sensor-based faucets, aerators, flow regulators, and pressure control devices, reducing wastage without compromising hygiene or comfort. Segregated pipelines for potable, recycled, and stormwater prevent losses and cross-contamination. Additionally, water-retaining materials and low-water-use curing techniques are adopted during construction and maintenance to further minimize water consumption.

The University prioritizes uninterrupted access to safe drinking water through RO, UV-purified dispensers installed across academic, residential, and public areas. Dedicated potable water pipelines and storage systems support supply, while regular internal monitoring and external laboratory testing ensure compliance with health and safety standards.

The University operates multiple Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to treat wastewater from academic, healthcare, residential, and laboratory facilities using sustainable and energy-efficient technologies that comply with regulatory standards. Wastewater collected through a dedicated sewer network is treated on-site, preventing untreated discharge. Treated water undergoes regular quality monitoring and is extensively reused for flushing, irrigation, gardening, cleaning, and water features, significantly reducing freshwater dependence and supporting the goal of zero liquid discharge.

Reuse and Distribution Systems

To facilitate efficient reuse, the University has implemented segregated pipeline networks that clearly distinguish between potable water, treated wastewater, and stormwater. Dedicated storage tanks for treated effluent ensure uninterrupted supply for reuse applications while preventing cross-contamination. Wastewater Treatment and Reuse Policy

Nitte (Deemed to be University) has adopted a comprehensive Wastewater Treatment and Reuse Policy, recognizing wastewater as a valuable reusable resource. The policy ensures 100% wastewater collection and treatment, promotes safe non-potable reuse, reduces dependence on freshwater, prevents environmental contamination, and supports a zero liquid discharge approach. All wastewater is treated in on-site sewage treatment plants (STPs) and reused for flushing, irrigation, gardening, cleaning, and water features through segregated pipeline systems. Regular quality monitoring, regulatory compliance, and dedicated operational oversight ensure safe and efficient functioning.

The policy is integrated into campus planning and continuously strengthened through audits, technological upgrades, and expanded reuse initiatives, reinforcing long-term water sustainability.



Stormwater Drainage System

Nitte (Deemed to be University) has established a resilient stormwater drainage system to manage surface runoff, reduce flood risks, prevent soil erosion, and protect water quality in alignment with SDG 6 and climate resilience goals. Designed based on campus topography and rainfall patterns, the system safely conveys runoff from rooftops, roads, and open areas through separate stormwater drains to prevent mixing with sewage. Infrastructure includes surface and underground drains, catch pits, culverts, and engineered channels, all regularly maintained. Stormwater is integrated with rainwater harvesting structures, recharge pits, and percolation systems to enhance groundwater recharge and improve water availability during dry periods.

Flood Prevention, Water Quality & Monitoring

The stormwater system is designed to manage peak runoff, minimize flooding, and prevent soil erosion through proper slope design, energy dissipation structures, vegetative measures, and landscaped buffers. Separate stormwater and wastewater networks prevent contamination, while regular cleaning of drains and silt traps protects downstream water bodies and recharge zones. Pre- and post-monsoon inspections, routine desilting, and structured maintenance ensure system efficiency. This integrated approach enhances campus safety, reduces waterlogging, protects infrastructure, and supports sustainable groundwater recharge and environmental balance.

Ensuring Sustainable Withdrawal and Supply of Fresh Water

Nitte (Deemed to be University) adopts a comprehensive strategy to ensure sustainable withdrawal, efficient use, and reliable freshwater supply. Water demand is periodically assessed, and sources are diversified through municipal supply, regulated groundwater extraction, and harvested rainwater. Withdrawal is monitored through metering systems and supported by recharge mechanisms such as rainwater harvesting pits and percolation systems. Freshwater demand is reduced through extensive reuse of treated wastewater via dual plumbing and segregated pipelines. Efficient distribution systems, leak detection, pressure regulation, and water-saving fixtures minimize losses. Safe drinking water is ensured through purification units, protected storage, regular testing, and contingency reserves. Awareness programs promote responsible usage, while periodic reviews and technological upgrades support continuous improvement. Together, these measures ensure long-term water security, institutional resilience, and environmental sustainability.

Regular water quality assessments are carried out through internal monitoring and certified external testing. Key infrastructure is equipped with dedicated storage systems and distinct pipelines for potable water, grey water, and stormwater, ensuring efficient and hygienic water management.

Rainwater at Nitte (Deemed to be University) is systematically harvested and utilized to support rooftop greenery, reflecting the university's eco-conscious approach to water conservation. This sustainable practice not only reduces dependence on external water sources but also enhances the aesthetic and environmental quality of campus spaces. By integrating rainwater harvesting into green terrace initiatives, the university demonstrates a strong commitment to low-impact, resource-efficient campus development.

Activities:
  • The A. B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, in collaboration with institutional stakeholders, organized an awareness-driven event titled "Dancing for Drops: Water Conservation in Action" on 22 March 2025, coinciding with World Water Day. The programme was held at the Glass House, K. S. Hegde Medical Hospital, with the objective of promoting water conservation through creative and participatory engagement.
  • Dr. N. S. A. M. First Grade College, Nitte organized an awareness and capacity-building programme titled "Water Conservation Technologies and Practices" on Saturday, 19 April 2025, from 09:00 AM to 12:00 PM, at the Workshop Seminar Hall, NMAM Institute of Technology (NMAMIT).
  • The Nitte University Centre for Science Education and Research (NUCSER) organized a Centre Visit and Outreach Awareness Session on Aquamarine on 16 January 2025 at the College of Fisheries, Kolkata. The programme was designed to strengthen academic interaction and promote awareness on sustainable aquatic resources, water quality, and responsible management of aquamarine ecosystems.


  • The Nitte University Centre for Science Education and Research (NUCSER), in collaboration with the NITTE-Government of Karnataka Centre of Excellence (COE) | AQUAMARIN, and with active participation from the NSS team of NUCSER, organized an outreach initiative titled "Lab to Land: Sustaining Blue Biodiversity - Lake Ranching".
  • The Nitte University Centre for Science Education and Research (NUCSER), in association with the NSS Unit of Nitte (Deemed to be University), undertook an Adoption and Rejuvenation Programme of a Weed-Infested Lake on 30 August 2025 at Innoli Village, Ullal Taluk, Dakshina Kannada District. The activity was conducted at the premises of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Higher Primary School, Innoli Village Gram Panchayat.
