Based on the World Inequality Report 2022, over the past years, the social condition of inequality has seriously deteriorated in sectors of income, wealth, health, gender, and carbon footprint in India. Several initiatives have been taken up by the Government of India to eliminate inequality and to empower the marginalized sections by expanding social security.

Universities in India also contribute to the cause of reducing inequality along with the support of the Government. Nitte (DU) provides equal opportunities in access to health care, education, sports, and extracurricular activities. Nitte (DU) is continuously striving towards reducing inequality, and shoulders the societal responsibilities in the region by conducting outreach programs.

Bridging the rural and urban gap in the healthcare sector and extending help for differently abled people. Karunya A helping hand for differently abled person

Karunya’ - A helping hand for the disabled, donated a walker to a 63-year-old female patient who underwent hip arthroplasty at Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital, Deralakatte on 25th January 2020. Dr. Purusotham Chippala, Assoc. Professor, NIPT handed over the walker to the patient in the presence of Ms. Abeeshna Ashok and Mrs. Shilna Rani, Faculty, NIPT.

‘Karunya’, the voluntary unit, run by the contribution of the teaching faculty of NIPT donated a pair of Foot Drop Splints on 31st January 2022, to a 53-year-old male patient diagnosed with bilateral foot drop and foot ulcer admitted in the general ward of Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital.







‘Karunya’- A helping hand for the disabled – the voluntary unit run from contributions of the Teaching Faculty of NIPT donated a walker on 26th March 2022 to a patient diagnosed with a compressive fracture of the spine admitted in the general ward of Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital. It was handed over by NIPT alumni Dr. Bipin Puneet, Principal, Florence College of Physiotherapy, Bengaluru.





Free Dental camp

The Department of Public Health Dentistry, AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences, Mangalore in association with the International College of Dentists conducted a free dental treatment camp at Primary Health Centre, Nellyadi on 20th July 2022. Oral health awareness was provided.

A total of 22 patients were screened



The Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences organized a free dental screening camp at Sri Sri Ravishankar Vidya Mandir, Yeyyadi, Konchady on 05.08.2022. The camp was organized by the postgraduate students under the guidance of Prof (Dr) Manju R, HoD, and Dr. Prajna Nayak.

The postgraduate students spoke on the importance of oral health awareness to the students and emphasized the need for regular dental check-ups. They provided a demonstration of the ideal brushing and flossing technique using a model. Further, the students were also given instructions on maintaining a non-cariogenic diet. A total of 260 patients were screened at the camp.









The Department of Public Health Dentistry, AB Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences in association with the International College of Dentists and Primary Health Centre, Nellyadi conducted a free dental treatment camp at Primary Health Centre, Nellyadi on 17.08.2022. Oral health awareness was provided.





Session on Stress management

A series of sessions on ‘Stress Management and Goal Setting’ was conducted by Ms. Pricilla D’Silva of ‘You Matter’- Counseling & Training Centre on 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th October, and 14th of November 2022 for I, II, III BSc and I and II MSc students of NUCSER. The sessions involved fun ice-breakers, understanding our body reactions during stressful situations, and skills to enhance time management and productivity.

Prioritizing tasks and managing time without leading to a build-up of stress on the mind and the body was also explained effectively. During the session, the students were allowed to meditate for 2-5 minutes at random intervals to teach them the impact of meditation on the body and mind. The skills taught during the sessions will help in handling stress, improving productivity, and caring for one’s mental health.





Challenges faced by students in Higher Education

The Mental Health Nursing Department in collaboration with the Anti-Ragging Cell of Nitte Usha Institute of Nursing Sciences organized a seminar on “Strategies to tackle challenges faced by students in higher educational institutions” on 10th December 2022 at the University Auditorium, Paneer campus. Ms. Agneita Aiman, Asst. Professor & Psychiatric social worker, KS Hegde Medical Academy was the resource person. She focused on the theme and explained anti-ragging measures and how to tackle various challenges faced during student life. The program began with a welcome address by Prof. Sabitha Nayak. 204 students participated in the program.







Christmas Eve celebrations

The NSS Cell, along with the faculty and students of NUCSER, celebrated Christmas by visiting the De Mercede Orphanage, Deralakatte, on 17th December 2022. De Mercede Orphanage, in Paneer village of Mangaluru Taluk in Dakshina Kannada district, is an organization working towards the betterment of socially and economically deprived children between the age group of 6 to 12.





Intercollegiate tournaments

The faculty and students of NIA participated in the intercollegiate tournaments organized by Nitte Deemed to be University.







Cultural Events organized towards the societal responsibilities Krishi Mela

Students of Classes 6 and 7 were taken to the ‘Krishi Mela’ organized at Mulki on 12th March 2022. Students were introduced to various agricultural implements, biofertilizers, apiculture, and a variety of artifacts made of cane and earth. This visit gave students a glimpse of the culture of Tulunadu.









Joy of Giving

Eventraa committee has organized the “Joy of Giving” event on 1st August 2022, which includes activities such as The Rose Day, Fashion Show, JKSHIM Got Talent, and Dandiya Night in the academic year 2021-2022. The Eventraa team organized these events for the students of the Institute, and the proceeding was used to support the children of the Nitte Government School.

The program was organized at the Institute’s auditorium, where the students of Nitte Government School handed over the gifts with sports goods, yoga mats, netballs, rackets, etc., in the presence of the headmistress and teachers of the school.





Annual cultural event, AIKYA 2022

Nitte University Centre for Science Education & Research conducted its annual cultural event, AIKYA 2022 on 17th December 2022 at the institute premises in Paneer to celebrate India’s different cultures and religions. Aikya is NUCSER’s unique way of spreading love, harmony, and peace. Prof. Vinod Aranha, Director, of Nitte Institute of Architecture was the chief guest, and Prof. Dr. Anirban Chakraborty,

Director, NUCSER presided over the function. Cultural events depicting the traditions of various religions and festivals followed the formal function. All the students came together and put up performances showcasing the rich heritage of our country and festivals. The event was a grand success, with over 300 participants. The program was supported by the teaching & non-teaching staff, and students of NUCSER.







Team Building Activities Effective Emotional Intelligence for everyday interaction with students

A 1.5-day Faculty Development Program on “Effective emotional intelligence for everyday interaction with students” was organized by NUCSER in association with the Staff Development Centre of Nitte University for the teaching staff of the institute. The resource person for the program was Dr. Vishwanath, Associate Professor, Dept. of Humanities, NMAMIT, Nitte. The participants enjoyed the activities thoroughly and were actively involved in the discussions. The sessions were highly appreciated by the faculty members.







Digital Literacy and self-defense Dr. NSAM First Grade College, Nitte | A workshop on Cyber Crime Awareness

Dr. NSAM First Grade College, Nitte hosted a workshop on Cyber Crime Awareness on 15th March 2022. Dr Ananth Prabhu G, Cyber Law & Security Expert conducted an interactive session with the students and staff about the perils of the internet. The focus of the session was to create awareness about the usage of the internet and networking devices which is a part and parcel of everyone’s life. Dr. Niranjan N. Chiplunkar, Principal, NMAMIT, Nitte delivered the presidential remarks.







The Women’s Cell of Nitte University Centre for Science Education & Research conducted a self-defense training program on 30 September 2022. Mr. Karthik Kateel & Mrs. Shobhalatha from Swaraksha Women Trust were the trainers. The program was arranged for undergraduate and post-graduate students. Mr. Karthik Kateel provided a summary of cyber security crimes and precautions to be taken when using an unauthorized network.

The chief guest of the University, Vice-Chancellor Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary said that the vision of the founder of Nitte, 43 years ago, the aim of providing girls education and youth higher education in the village called Nitte is the result of the foresight of founders of Nitte Institute, today has grown into twenty thousand students spread in Deralakatte, Nitte, and Bengaluru.

Professor and Academic Dean, Ravi Physiotherapy College, Maharashtra, Dr. Rakesh Krishna Kovala, and Pre-Conference Organizer Vivek Vijayan Menon were present. Principal of Nitte College of Physiotherapy, Prof. Dr. Dhanesh welcomed all, and the Coordinator, Dr. Soumya Srivastava presented the vote of thanks.

Positive thinking in us through sports Kshema Premier League-2022 Inauguration Deralakatte March 28:

Along with increasing physical fitness, we can also increase positivity if we engage more and more in the field of sports. Therefore, everyone must engage in sports activities, said the Pro-Chancellor, Vishal Hegde, at the event of the KSHEMA Premier League held at KSHEMA ground.

Along with academics, Nitte is giving preference to sports activities and the students must take advantage of this opportunity. Nitte (DU),Sports advisor Dr. Muralikrishna welcomed the gathering. Dr. Siddharth Shetty proposed the vote of thanks. Physical Education Director Dr. Karunakar Shetty compered the event. Tulu Language Translation Plan

Prof. Dr. R Chandrahsekharan, The Director of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil, said, the Central Government aims to give equal opportunity for all languages. Accordingly, first, the Tulu translation Plan is undertaken. Nitte (DU) in association with the Central Institute of Classical Tamil, Chennai, translation from Tamil to Tulu and Koraga plan, tirukkural workshop was held on Thursday at K.S Hegde Hospital.

Along with Indian languages such as Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Tulu, and Kannada, the Institute has aimed to translate international languages such as Hebrew, Chinese, Arabic, and Spanish. Out of 100 Indian languages, Tulu is one of the languages, along with Koraga and tribal languages are planned to be translated into Tamil.

Dr. Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Vice-Chancellor, Nitte (DU) presided over the function. Nitte University is not only limited to treatment but also gives importance to the growth of languages. Like Tamil, Tulu, and Koraga, though an old language, due to less support, it has not grown. One should come out of the mindset that dignity is only gained by speaking the English language and should give importance to the mother tongue as well.

Dr. Alagamuttu V, JRO, Central Institute of Classical Tamil, Premkumar L R, JRO, Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore, Tamil-Tulu expert, Dr. Padmanabha Kekunnaya, Rajalakshmi Bhandary, Pangala-Koraga language expert, Babu Koraga, were present.
